We have several of these feeders and they always attract numerous birds using black oil sunflower seed. While our other feeders (Droll Yankee, etc.) are often emptied by deer, these are not . Of course nothing stops squirrels, chipmunks and raccoons.
We attract hundreds of House Finches to our yard (Coastal Southern California) with this feeder filled with black oil sunflower seed. The optional seed catch tray helps the mourning doves get at the seed, but there is still a layer of empty shells under the feeder. The tray doesn’t really catch very much!
